Each spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and a lander. The Viking 1 lander was located on the western slope of Chryse Planitia at 22° latitude and 48° longitude and Viking 2 landed in Utopia Planitia at 48° latitude and 226° longitude. Viking Lander 1 transmitted data until November 11, 1982. and Viking Lander 2 ceased transmission April 11, 1980.
