    Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN)

    CERTIFIED
DAN was contributed by the Federal Space Agency of Russia. Igor Mitrofanov (IKI) leads the team. DAN is a pulsing neutron generator that can detect water content in the soil and resolve water and ice beneath the surface. It can operate in active/passive modes to measure the abundance and depth distribution of H- and OH-bearing materials (e.g., adsorbed water, hydrated minerals) in a shallow layer (~1 m) of Mars' subsurface.

The DAN instrument is used during rover traverses and while the rover is parked. Short-duration (< 2 min) measurements provided a rough estimate of the water-equivalent hydrogen distribution with an accuracy of ~1% by weight. Longer-duration (~30 min) measurements are necessary to derive the vertical distribution of water-equivalent hydrogen with an accuracy of 0.1-0.3% by weight.
During periods of traverse one hour of passive DAN measurements are taken at intervals along the traverse. DAN acquires active measurements during the approach and at the new location.
